Unclaimed Property Events in States like Illinois are working to give back billions in unclaimed property

Illinois has $1.5 billion in unclaimed money.

Huntington Beach, CA (PRWEB) August 01, 2012
Unclaimed cash remains a mystery for many, who are unaware of its existence. The Illinois unclaimed property division, headed by Dan Rutherford, is currently holding on to $1.5 billion in unclaimed cash for Illinois residents. This is just a fraction of the overall unclaimed property being held in the United States, and Rutherford plans to return it all with his new initiatives and the help of CashUnclaimed.com.

With the hopes to return a majority of this unclaimed cash and increase awareness, Illinois State Treasurer, Dan Rutherford held a “Cash Dash” event Monday, July 9th, 2012, from 10am to 12pm at the Champaign Public Library, located at 200 W. Green Street. Rutherford’s “Cash Dash” has already helped Illinois residents reclaims over $101.6 million in unclaimed money or cash last year, and plans on returning more this year.

According to Rutherford, “It is common for people to lose track of their assets when they move or when loved ones pass away.” This is why the “Cash Dash” has been crucial in the success of returning Illinois unclaimed funds to it’s owners. CashUnclaimed.com has also been helping many in Illinois, and all over the country find their unclaimed money for free, with one of the world's largest unclaimed money databases in the world.

Any unclaimed funds from business and banks are required by state law to turn the assets over the state treasurer’s office. The most common types of unclaimed money sitting with the Illinois State Treasurer’s office include money from inactive checking and savings accounts, unpaid wages or commissions, stocks, bonds or mutual funds, unclaimed money orders, safety deposit box contents, and unclaimed life insurance policies.

Rutherford has tried to simplify the process of searching for unclaimed money over the years. The people of Illinois can search for their unclaimed money through the state’s provided unclaimed money database, or use the best unclaimed money database in the world, CashUnclaimed.com. Other ways the public can search for their unclaimed money is by attending the “Cash Dash” events, such as Monday’s at the Champagne library. The office also puts inserts in the paper, twice a year, with unclaimed property information, along with sending direct mail to the last known address of unclaimed property holders of $100 or more.

Dan Rutherford and the state of Illinois is working hard to return the $1.5 billion in unclaimed funds. However, this small fraction makes up the total United States unclaimed money, and each state government has been working hard to reduce these amounts. CashUnclaimed.com still remains one of the best websites to use when searching for unclaimed money in Illinois, or any state.
